Why I Wrote The Seven C’s of Why

When I set out to write The Seven C’s of Why, my goal was clear: create something genuinely valuable for start-ups and micro-businesses—something practical, relatable, and actionable. I wanted to see the world through the eyes of the entrepreneur: enterprising, ambitious, and always searching for meaningful business support.

I had plenty of ideas—what entrepreneur doesn’t? But I knew that to make a real impact, I needed to start by listening. For six months, I gathered insights and candid feedback from my target audience. I asked tough questions, sorted the honest answers into themes, and let them shape not just the book, but my entire approach.

Three key outcomes emerged from this process:

1. The Rainmakers Club evolved to better meet the needs of its members through The Business Buddy Library.

2. This book was born—a practical guide rooted in real-world experience and community insight.

3. A new development program was designed, directly aligned with the book’s principles.

Building the Book Around Real Entrepreneurial Needs

I reached out to founders, self-starters, and business owners with two big questions:

• If you were going to purchase a book to help you develop your business, what would you look for?

• What would you want from a development program built around the same themes?

Their answers painted a vivid picture of what today’s entrepreneurs truly need: actionable frameworks, mindset development, ongoing support, and a sense of community. The end result? A book—and a program—that’s designed to help you not just survive, but thrive.

Why “The Seven C’s of Why”?

The title comes from a deep dive into my own business journey. Over the years, I’ve filled countless journals with notes, reflections, and lessons learned—from my first ventures to today. When I revisited these journals, a clear pattern began to emerge: the most successful businesses, regardless of size or sector, answer a series of core questions—questions that shape strategy, drive performance, and foster real growth.

Add to this my continued quest to create the 'Purple Pirate Community' and the simple fact that all my fellow Purple Pirates understand that to create the success they desire, they have to navigate the Seven C's (A shameless play on words, but so what, we're Purple Pirates!)

From these patterns, I distilled seven essential requirements, each representing a critical area of business development. And at the heart of them all? One vital question: Why?

What Are the Seven C’s?

While I’ll be unpacking each “C” in detail over the coming weeks, here’s what you can expect:

Meet the Purple Pirate Community

When you join The Business Buddy Library, you’re not just signing up for resources—you’re joining the Purple Pirate Community. What’s a Purple Pirate? It’s my way of describing entrepreneurs who are determined to make a real difference, building businesses that stand out and push boundaries at the cutting edge.

The name comes from two of my favourite books: Seth Godin’s Purple Cow and Sam Conniff Allende’s Be More Pirate. Seth Godin inspires us to stand out from the crowd, just like a purple cow would grab attention in a field of ordinary brown and white cows. Sam Conniff Allende, on the other hand, digs into the real-life pirate culture of the 1600s—not the cartoonish pirates of pop culture, but bold thinkers who challenged the status quo and shaped change, centuries ahead of their time.

For small business owners, I believe we should aim to be both: “more Purple” (daringly different) and “more Pirate” (courageously creative). The Purple Pirate Community represents people who’d rather be trailblazers than follow the corporate crowd—people who want to start their own (R)Evolution, transforming not only their businesses but their mindsets and culture.

In this community, standing out is a strength. Thinking differently is encouraged. And learning how to navigate the Seven C’s? That’s your map.
